Hello everybody. This is the first of many in a series of custom MMA figure reviews I will be doing. Since I’m one of the biggest MMA custom collectors out there and am now writing for MMAfigs.com, I’m going to review some customs each week for you guys and show pictures of them! So let’s get to it!
This week I’ll be reviewing the very first MMA custom I bought, and in my opinion it’s one of the top 5 in my collection: my WWE Ruthless Aggression-style Chuck Liddell, made by the ever-so-popular Famousj. I saw the prototypes of this Chuck Liddell on Famousj’s website, and this was within a few days’ time span of Jakks announcing that they had acquired the license to make UFC figures. I immediately had to contact Famousj about getting this thing. It was only a prototype but it looked amazing.
The custom itself is amazing. The parts choices and modifications were all done flawlessly. He modified the torso nearly perfect for Chuck Liddell’s stature. I’m not even sure what torso was used for this thing. The shorts were modified and sized up so the upper legs have no articulation but that was all good because it is a perfect display custom. The shorts used on the figure are RA Jonathan Coachmen shorts, used in RA15 I believe, but don’t quote me on that. The head is a Stone Cold Steve Austin head scan which is perfectly modified to look like the Iceman. Famousj expertly applied his logos that he designed himself on his computer and then printed out. The skin tone is perfect and perfectly applied.
I was able to talk to Famousj himself about this figure, so let’s launch into a mini-interview!
Brett Sharrow of MMAFigs.com (MF): What inspired you to create this custom Chuck Liddell?
Customizer “Famousj”(FJ): Nothing other than I thought he would be a neat to do. It was before a lot of people on the Custom boards were doing MMA customs. I am not a huge Iceman fan. I like to watch him fight, but he is not my favorite fighter.
MF: What other MMA customs have you made?
FJ: I have made, a couple of Liddell's, GSP, Tito Ortiz, Wanderlei Silva & the UFC Tile belt
MF: Do you plan to make any other MMA customs?
FJ: Yeah, I am going to make a Mayhem Miller & a Shonie Carter soon
MF: What MMA custom has been your most enjoyable to make?
FJ: Wandy [Wanderlei Silva –ed], by far. I really enjoyed getting his body type right, and doing the head sculpt on that one. Doing MMA customs are fun for me because of the details on the shorts. It allows me to use one of my strengths, using decals. Something I really enjoy doing.
MF: Do you watch MMA?
FJ: Yes, I hate to sound like one of those guys that said they watched in from the beginning, but I kind of did. My friend worked at a gas station that rented videos and he brought over "The Beginning" and I remember watching it, and being in awe. Not really enjoying the violence, in fact I remember being kind of disturbed by it, but really liked the competition and the back stories. I kept up with it for a few years on VHS, but kind of got out of it until College. My roommate was a HUGE MMA fan; he had all the tapes from Japan and Brazil, 100’s of them. I remember watching them all the time, and it really made me appreciate it even more. But I also got a little tired of it too. So I took another break from it, and then got back into it when FSN started airing PRIDE events and then of course the TUF boom came, and now I keep up with full time.
MF: Who is your favorite MMA fighter?
FJ: My favorite? Wanderlei Sakuraba... just kidding. But both of those guys are my favorite. I really can't choose between them. I know that both are past their prime, but I 'm 30 years old. I watched the Axe-Murderer and The Gracie Hunter dominate for 10 years.
Many thanks to Famousj for agreeing to the interview; you can check out Famousj’s work here. Thank you everyone for reading this article. Stay tuned to MMAfigs.com for more Custom figure reviews from me in the coming weeks!
