Renato Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi: FOTY 2009?
Affliction's "Stacked Undercard" No Joke as 2 Top Light Heavyweights Meet
Regarding Affliction's third (and rumored final) event known simply as "Trilogy", it's easy to see why Affliction has been mainly promoting two things for their event: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett and a "stacked undercard". For quite a while now, multiple hype videos released by Affliction have focused almost soley on Fedor/Barnett, with a "stacked undercard" being highlighted in the last few seconds. It's gotten to the point where the phrase is almost more of a buzz word than anything else.
With the added controversy of Barnett testing positive for steroids and therefore unable to compete in his match with Fedor, it's understandable that the "stacked undercard" has once again fallen by the wayside.
Although Affliction has promoted the undercard of "Trilogy" more as a collective whole than a series of individual fights, that whole "stacked undercard" thing rings true when you consider it features a match like Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Gegard Mousasi.
One is a popular veteran known for his fiery personality, will to survive, and ability to submit men both big and small. The other may not be as world-known, but has earned a reputation amongst hardcore fans as being able to knock out or submit anyone at any time, especially when you consider that the biggest highlight of his career is a stunning upkick that KTFO'd his opponent.
Watch the following video and see why I think this match is going to be on everyone's minds when talks of "Fight of the Year 2009" roll around.
Pumped yet? I certainly am. I have to hand it to Affliction: they know how to promote a fight. Their video quality, especially in HD, has consistently blown me away.
If this fight lives up to its potential, it may just steal the show. Fans will have to tune in August 1 on Pay-Per-View to see if that is the case.
