No Surgery, Only Rehab, for GSP's Injury
Despite Early Fears, Groin Pull Won't Be Landing GSP on a Gurney
Fans of George St-Pierre need not worry, “Rush” won’t be rushing to a hospital any time soon.
On his way to a five-round all-out domination of Thiago Alves at “UFC 100: Making History”, the current UFC Welterweight Champion and legend-in-the-making suffered a groin injury late in the third round. After the fight, “Rush” appeared to be in considerable pain, but a recent MRI revealed that no surgery would be required. It’ll take a bit of rehab, but GSP should be back in the gym soon.
Hopefully, and most likely, GSP will give his body ample time to heal before preparing for his next opponent, which will be either Mike Swick or Martin Kampmann, depending on who wins in their UFC 103 encounter. Both men seem to be the foil of one another and should pose some interesting threats to Georges: Mike “Quick” Swick is known for his punching power but has several submission victories to his credit, while Martin Kampmann is known more for his ground game but has finished fights with his fists before.
Myself, I’m thinking UFC 110, maybe UFC 111, as a return date for “Rush”. I’m also picking Mike “Quick” Swick to be the next challenger. GSP may well be one of the most dominant welterweight fighters of all time…but it’s far too early to call his division dead. With a possible superfight with current middleweight kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva once again making its rounds around the rumor-mill, interesting times are certainly ahead for those that wish to challenge the riddum of Georges St-Pierre.
