UFC on Versus 4 / Release of Marquardt / Kongo V.S. Barry / Oliveira illegal knee

So a lot going on this weekend, and I feel as this section of the boards is kind of dead. I feel as this could kind of be a nice section of the boards to talk about the sport without it having to be figures.

    ****SPOILERS BELOW****

First of all, not sure who follows all the news and such, but Nate Marquardt was removed from the card and released from the UFC.

He had 6 weeks to take care of "something" and did not, and could not clear pre fight medicals before the fight, I would assume this enraged White enough to release him. The PSAC (Penn. State Athletic Commission) has also suspended his licensing in that state until he can clear whatever it was. I will update this thread when that "something" is announced publicly.

Second, the actual UFC on Versus 4 card itself.

For this being a non PPV card, I feel this card was actually pretty nicely setup, and was very exciting. I watched the pre fights on Facebook

Michael Johnson def. Edward Faaloloto via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 4:42

Ricardo Lamas def. Matt Grice via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 4:41

This fight wasn't too bad at all, pretty action packed and another first round ending.

Charles Oliveira def. Nik Lentz via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 2, 1:48

**UFC executive Marc Ratner stopped by the media row and confirmed the commission is going to review the fight because of the clearly illegal knee.**

This fight was actually very fun to watch, as it was very back and fourth. When it comes to the illegal knee, I thought it was definitely illegal, but the ref obviously didn't think it was bad enough to stop. The crowd instantly rained in boos. These are fighters and in the moment things like this happen, and it seemed like Lentz was able to recover somewhat as he got back up fully before getting knee'd again and then submitted. I honestly think Oliveira is an amazing fighter, and becoming a favorite in the lightweight division. *This was also the fight of the night*

Rich Attonito def. Daniel Roberts via unanimous decision (29-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Not too much I can say about this, was a very exciting 3rd round, but Attonito should've finished the fight.

For the rest of these, I was in a work training so I didn't get to catch these until the Kongo fight.

Joe Lauzon def. Curt Warburton via submission (kimura) - Round 1, 1:58

Javier Vazquez def. Joe Stevenson via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

I could see Stevenson getting released for this, as it is his 4th loss in a row.

Tyson Griffin def. Manny Gamburyan via majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29)

    Main Card

Matt Mitrione def. Christian Morecraft via KO (punches) - Round 2, 4:28

Matt Brown def. John Howard via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Charlie Brenneman def. Rick Story via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Cheick Kongo def. Pat Barry via KO (punches) - Round 1, 2:39

Very quick fight, and was awesome. Barry rocked Kongo twice before getting flash ko'd by Kongo, was a good KO either way, although I wanted to see Barry win.

Kongo seems to be hit or miss. I think against top tier opponents he will fail which is a shame because he's a tough competitor when he's up to standard. So much for Rick Story huh? The kid was coming in tonight with a lot of hype, seems UFC was ready to make him a little "story" there selves, this loss ends any hope of a better story any time soon though. He'll need to win another 3 in a row to get back into any sort of "contention" talks I think. Props to his opponent who took the fight on such short notice, the PA kid really wanted the fight and it showed.

Joe Stevenson....all that talk and you still lost. I agree with you, UFC might let him go.
