Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz set for UFC 137 in Las Vegas
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 01, 2011 at 6:25 pm ET
The hurdles have apparently been cleared.
Despite his recent insistence that a bout between current UFC champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) and Strikeforce title holder Nick Diaz (25-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) was anything but a done deal, UFC president Dana White today announced the two welterweights will clash in the main event of the previously unannounced UFC 137 event.
According to White, the contest will take place Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Diaz always brings the fight no matter what, if Daley couldnt KO him, GSP certainly will not so diaz aint gonna be afraid of his weak ass standup lately. Only way this fight sucks is if GSP sucks the life out of another main event like he always does.
Only way gsp wins this one is by boring decision. Diaz can win by any way if he can keep control of fight.
Why do people always badmouth GSP about his fights? Do people not realize that HE IS THE CHAMPION. And I don't mean that in a cocky way, I mean that in the sense that since he is the champion I don't see why HE should be the one pushing the action and going for finishes. People always say that he's a boring fighter and he never goes for finishes. But people don't seem to realize that since he is the champion, the OPPONENT should be the one pushing the action and solidifying the win by trying to go for knockouts and submission attempts. Afterall they are the ones trying to win the match and get the belt. GSP already has the belt, he just needs to keep doing what he's doing.

Well if everyones saying hes boring, then there must be some truth. Other champs seem to be able to finish opponents. Why not gsp? All i said is hes boring. I never said he wasnt good at what he does. Hes a former shell of his hungry self and this cannot be denied. GSp retains all his old fans, but doubt hes gaining any new ones. Perhaps even losing some old school fans. I guarantee Diaz will be the one driving up the ppv sales cuz they think he might be able to make an otherwise boring main event, entertaining.
GSP doesnt need to be hungry anymore. He's at the top of his division and quite frankly, the top of MMA in general. There's nothing to be hungry for when you already have the title. The ones that should be to blame are his opponents. Koscheck, Hardy, Shields, Fitch. None of them did anything to provoke GSP to attempt anything. I'm sure if they pushed the action and backed GSP into a corner he would have no choice but to attempt to finish them but since none of them ever did anything but become GSP's punching bag, there was no reason to force a finish from GSP.
It's just like in football. If you have a 42-7 lead over an opponent, are you going to keep pushing forward or are you going to play it safe and just let your defense dø the rest? The team that has 7 points is the team that needs to be pushing forward with everything they got. The team that has 42 points doesn't need to dø anything but lay and wait.

If you dont have the desire to be there then quit and go do something else. I dont like my time being wasted by someone whos only there to collect a check and outpoint everyone every round. I can watch high school wrestling for that. You still never answered my question, why does every other champ able to finish their opponents consistently???? Why dont THEY want to do the bare minimum to win each fight? Every job in the world has the employees who just do the minimum to keep their job, and thats exactly who GSP is now. Instead hes there to keep the gold plate and sponsors. He really doesnt need the money anymore at this point.
As for Shields being GSP punching bag, quite the opposite in the last half of the fight, it was gsp with the bloody and swollen face.... But you must have missed that part. And as everyone has said, shields boxing is quite weak.
Who won the fight though? Sheilds didn't try to go for a knockout, didn't attempt to bring it to the mat, didn't attempt submissions. He was scared of GSP, and that's why no one can beat him. Everyone is scared of GSP. Everyone is so afraid to do anything to him because he is so well-rounded. And if you think that GSP doesn't have the "desire to be there" then you must not have been watching MMA very long. The kid doesn't do anything but eat and sleep MMA. While most fighters only train when they have a fight coming up, GSP trains everyday of his life.
The reason that other champions are able to "finish" their opponents is because their opponents actually push the action and make them go for finishes. Gray Maynard attacks and attacks when he fights which is why his fight with Edgar was Epic. Chael Sonnen used his wrestling and GnP to completely dominate Anderson Silva which made Silva dig deep and pull off the submission. Vitor tried everything to knock out Silva which is why Silva was given the opportunity and landed the front kick KO. The other opponents actually try to take the title away from the champion but none of GSP's opponents EVER try to take that title away from him. Shields looked so impressive in his fight over Hendo but when he was face to face with GSP he seemed to be scared to do anything. Koscheck was the same way. He looked good in his fights against Rumble Johnson and Frank Trigg but when he's across from GSP he freezes up just like everyone else of GSP's opponents.
I understand that you would like to see someone get knocked out or submitted in every fight, but GSP isn't going to attempt a submission on someone and risk the chance of getting KO'd or submitted himself if the opponent isn't even going to push the action. Go back and watch all of GSP's fights since he won the title and tell me which one of his opponent's actually attempted to do something? I guarantee you won't be able to find one time in any of his fights where GSP was actually pushed to the limit.

Uhhm id say maybe half of anderson silvas come at him. And he still demolished the ones who completely run away. I dont care what gsp does, i just know what to expect everytime he steps into the cage and to any casual fans who may be sitting nearby asking me whys this guy such a big deal, All ill be able to say is cuz hes the best at pointing ppl. Just sad cuz i was one of gsp biggest fans. But why waste my money/time now when theres much more entertaining fighters coming thru the UFC non stop. Usually fans are sad when an era ends or a fighter retires, but i can honestly say at this point i wouldnt miss him much. When liddell retired everyone was saddened a bit inside, cuz every liddell fight you watch was fireworks. Thats a champ, thats a fighter, thats an entertainer who will be missed. Same goes for all the other great ones who realize theyre in an entertainment field. Like i said GSP is good at what he does, But the majority of fans arent interested in what hes been doing lately. I cant imagine in any realm where gsp FINISHES diaz. I really cant.
GSP is a smart safe fighter, does that make him the most exciting no. Yes some of his fights come off a little slow but when a guy beats u at your own game it's impressive, kos who is such a great striker got picked apart on the feet so he tried to go back to his roots of wrestling and repeatedly got stuffed. Shields never showed up got one takedown stuffed and mentally checked out, gsp breaks people before the fight even starts. I love how u used the andrson silva reference, people were talking so much crap on him on how he runs and dances and is so disrespectful then he gets another flash ko and everyone forgets about his past 4 fights that were so heavily criticized. At the end of the day u have to respect them both, they have beat everyone in there division and generally escape the fight with no real damage. I can't wait to see GSP dominate Diaz, I think George can win the fight on the feet on the mat or on the scorecards. I can't stand the Diaz brothers or anyone in that camp, they dominate in strikeforce then get dominated in the UFC, hopefully we see an exciting fight on the 29th but either way it's up to Diaz to take the belt and I don't see that happening. Ps I love Anderson silva also.
